Things I’ve learned in 40 years:
You will want to look older until you finally look old.
Have a good book with you at all times.
You can feel alone in a crowded room.
Friendship will save you when you least expect it.
It’s OK to say no.
Saying Yes is where the adventure begins.
You can get everything you want and it won’t fix you.
You will always want to lose 5 more pounds.
Words can wound and heal, it’s up to you how to use them.
Questioning your faith doesn’t mean you don’t have faith.
It’s never too late to change—your path, your hair color, your likes, your style, your mind.
Forgive.
Find a routine that serves you, don’t worry about someone else’s routine.
Laugh. Laugh when it’s funny. Laugh when you are angry and you feel the giggles but don’t want to admit it. Laugh behind your kid’s back when he calls your anatomy “Baby Feeders” and then tells you that your baby feeders are falling. And while you want to tell him it’s his fault they are falling, LAUGH.
Say thank you—to the stranger, to the waiter, to your friends, to your family, to your spouse, to God.
Find one thing everyday to pay attention to and really enjoy.
Sleep and water.
Dreams do come true, but you will have to work for it.
Never stop learning. Always be willing to be wrong, it’s where you do your best learning.
If someone pays you a compliment believe them and say thank you.
Here’s to the next forty decade of adding to the list.
